Other Dogs

This page is a tribute to our two previous dogs, Lightning and Molly. Neither were flat-coats, but they were both great dogs. Lightning was our first dog as a family. We rescued her when she was a year old and on her way to a shelter in 2001; she was just too wild for her original owners. We named her Lightning because when we first brought her home, she went tearing around our back yard and I commented that she ran like “greased lightning” and the name stuck. She was sold as a pure-bred yellow Labrador retriever, but if she really was, she had the worst genes in history (though she was the healthiest, soundest dog you could imagine). She passed away in July, 2014 at the ripe old age of 14½, a very long life for a lab.

We adopted Molly from the Pasadena Humane society a couple of years later. She was a mutt through and through, and we think she was about 15 months old at the time. She had a bad case of entropion, so we knew we were going to have a big vet bill as part of the deal. The surgery went very well and she had 7½ happy years with us before she passed away in August, 2010. The funniest thing about Molly was that she was a very calm, docile dog until deer came nearby. Then she would turn into “Molly Deerslayer” and chase them all over the neighborhood. When the deer disappeared and Molly came back, she was her usual low-key self again.

Pictures of Lightning and Molly are located in their own photo gallery.
